The West Linn Lions Club is hosting its third annual Tool and Toy Sale: It’s a Guy Thing! on Saturday June 9 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bolton Primary School and next-door Hammerle Park, off Highway 43 at 5933 Holmes St.

“The idea of guys going to garage sales and not finding tools or sports equipment, etc. was disappointing, thus the guy thing was born — an open Saturday where there would be just guy tools and toys for sale,” said Mike Watters, immediate past president of the West Linn Lions Club.

Food will be available, including barbecue meats from the Willamette General Store.

The event is a fund-raiser for the Lions’ high school scholarship fund and community service projects. This year five $1,000 scholarships for education, special needs, health, vocational and computer science will be awarded.

The day is filled with activities — a live and silent auction, gadgets and gizmos on display and for purchase, and a wrench toss with prizes from G.I. Joe’s.

“The wrench toss is open to men and women. We are trying to see if the police and fire department will have a little competition,” said Watters.

Pre-used tools and toys will be for sale similar to a large garage sale, said Watters.

“We are looking for people to donate their used items,” said Watters. “We can help with pick-up, if desired. The donation can be tax deducted with a receipt.”

Watters said people can also bring items they wish to sell and reserve a table for $35 within the Bolton gymnasium. When selling items Watters said they are also giving back to the community.

“All of the proceeds go to the scholarship fund,” said Dick Akins, President of the West Linn Lions Club. “We targeted students in the high school that are recommended from the school. It’s not based solely on academics, it’s based on community involvement, their interest in helping out other folks and their career commitments that will allow them to have a broad base of interest.”

Items at Latus Motors, Market of Choice and Bales are available on location to bid on for the auction featuring Father’s Day items. Watters said he encourages other local stores to participate in the silent auction.

And he hopes that local families can rummage through their closets to find items to share.

“When you see the impact of the scholarships you begin to see the importance of running around asking for things like old riding lawn mowers and golf clubs,” Watters said.

Akins said the event is planned near Father’s Day on purpose.

“It’s what I call ‘double duty dollars,’” said Akins. “You can get a tool or toy for your special dad and the proceeds go to develop the scholarships funds. You can have fun shopping and everything that you purchase has a real impact on students locally.”
